The topic for this week’s Illustration Friday is “secret’. My painting is based on a photo I took of a young maiko (apprentice geisha) in Japan earlier this year. Waiting outside the red lanterned geisha house for her onee-san (teacher) there was something about the furtive glance which opened a channel into her secret world of dance, tea ceremony and the art of casual conversation.
Elusive by day, the geisha are an occasional scurrying blur as they glide the streets to perform their daytime errands. By night their world is one of high culture, performance and story telling. Secret.

Great to be introduced to your work and I love everything about this beautiful figure. It’s a showpiece!
You rendered this quite nicely! After reading your description I’d say this fits well with the title. Your paintings seem to capture the essence of your subject without getting very detailed. Lots of nice work on your site.
Thanks Andrew! Always happy to hear your comments…
Lovely! Wonderful brushwork and color choices.
Thanks for your comment Sally!
This is really beautifully painted! Nice Work!
Hi Patti, thanks for visiting!
You really captured the furtive glance! And the clenched fists add another dimension. Lovely painting style, lots of texture.
Thanks Cindy! Really appreciate your comments.
This is so beautiful! Very inspiring! Is it painted with acrylics or oil? I absolutely love the highlights and shading in the textiles.
Hi Janne, thanks for your comment. I work in a combination of acrylics and oils in my paintings… I use an impasto gel medium as the base then overlay with the oil paint. Thanks for stopping by!
