OIL PAINTING FROM A PHOTO - AN EXAMPLE

1. The Photo
The challenge here was to create a full colour oil painting from the
client's grainy black and white photo of her husband and his father
at Beechworth in 1963.

2. The Draft
Because the details of the car were somewhat blurry, I needed to source a detailed picture of an identical car to paint from. Luckily I had just been to a Holden motor show and had a photo of this FJ in exactly the same colour as the original! With a little more research into the clothing styles and colours of the day, the painting starts to take shape...

3. The Finished Oil Painting
More colour and detail is added. I wanted to portray a bright sunny afternoon with a happy atmosphere. Gradually the layers are built up to produce a rich textured finish. Finally two coats of varnish are applied.
